Prior to signing up for the Dirty Kanza 200 this year, my friend Keith Clark convinced me we should do our previously planned Blast to Nebraska - B2N. The idea for this came after a double century on road bikes 6 of us had done in March 2009. Back then we rode 206 miles from my house in Bartlesville, OK to Lawrence, KS; this was the first double century any of us had ridden. During the Lawrence Double we had several east-west cross sections that were necessary to keep the ride on paved roads. Soon after Keith suggested next time we ride “straight up the gut”, using whatever road takes us north while minimizing east-west traffic (hence “blast”), whether that road be paved, gravel, dirt, or cow path. |

Board meeting began at 18:13 on 4/19/10. Meeting was held at Outlaw's Restaurant and members present were Rudy, Kevin, Dan, Marsha and Raymond. Alan provided a spreadsheet with budget income and expenses. Dan proposed that there was no need for an actual monthly budget report. Over the last 5 years total balance has increased to $1100. Kevin proposed that the club cover all expenses for upcoming Spring Fling, which would include $160 for reservations of camp site plus food expense of up to $100. This would be for the groceries purchased to be used at the campgrounds. The proposal was voted on and approved. Spring Fling will be May 7-9th at Birch Lake. Norman will be purchasing the groceries for the event. Kevin has the routes ready for the daily rides. Our next meeting will be on May 17th at the library. Pizza will be provided if there is enough interest. Rudy briefly acknowledged he is prepared to update the members on the upcoming bike rodeo. He also inquired about types of bike locks that members may have knowledge of. His concern is for the security of children's bikes when they ride to school. Rudy also addressed a concern for matching a pre-teen triathlon trainer with a club member in a possible mentoring position. The child's parent is not a strong cyclist and there is a need for better training for him in this area. Board meeting was adjourned at 18:32. The membership meeting began at 18:46 with introductions. There were 19 members present. Announcements included: - Bike to work day is Friday, May 21. Sean has agreed to promote bike to work day at Conoco Phillips.
- The Tour de Cure ride is Saturday, May 15. There are currently 3 club members forming a team to ride in the Tour de Cure. They are Dan Schultes, Sean Orta and Marsha Greenland, with Dan as the team captain. It is not too late to join the team if anyone is interested.
- Donations accepted until May 30th.
- web address is tinyurl.com/DanTDC2010
- If COP employee or COP/PPCo retiree, can complete on-line form for COP to match donation if over $50.
- The treasury report was presented by Kevin. There was a deposit of $84 from dues collected and expenses were $308.50. The expenses included $263 for the Cycling Smarts books ordered and $45 for pizza expenses for the March meeting. Our balance is $2658.68.
- The mountain bike report was presented by Malcolm Joyce. There is an upcoming race on May 2nd at Turkey Mountain.
- The road bike report was scheduled to be presented by Alan who was not available. In lieu of that report we learned that Rhonda is in good spirits after her injuries and we wish her speedy recovery.
- Freewheel training rides are going well, however there is a need for more members to volunteer to be ride leaders. The Tuesday and Thursday night rides are up to about 22 miles each evening and the Saturday morning rides are longer. We were reminded to be considerate of drivers when we begin our rides. There have been complaints that we scatter all over the road. This would most likely occur during "mass" take offs. Also be courteous at stop signs and take turns, two riders at a time. It is a good idea to always have lights in place on your bike too, as you never know when you may have something detain your arrival home and you may need to have the lights available. It is better to be safe than sorry.
- Flower Power is this Saturday, April 24th, and there are several Pedalers who intend to ride.
- The web/newsletter update was not presented as Dale was not available.
- Old business
- Keith updated us on freewheel information. New jerseys are being designed. The deadline to save on registration for freewheel is April 30th. Speed wheel is scheduled for Wednesday, June 16th at Tahlequah. Many club members indicate intentions to ride in the OK Freewheel this year.
- Rudy presented a bicycle rodeo update. The rodeo is scheduled for May 1st. He passed a sign up sheet around for volunteers to help set up on Friday night, April 30th or Saturday morning if rain and for help with the rodeo itself. He explained it is not a competition but an instructional event. The intent is to instill safe riding practices among the participants. There will be loaner helmets available along with bicycle inspections before the ride. The police department will have a presentation. There is a picture inviting the participants to identify 12 hazards to the cyclists. The course will include a rock dodge, who's there, crazy cross roads and rail road crossings. Cory and Mike Maloney have donated the funds for a Trek bike to be presented to the winner of a drawing for the bike. There is hopes to come up with the funds to present two bikes, one for a girl and one for a boy.
- Kevin shared the Spring Fling update. It is scheduled for May 7th-9th at Birch Lake. He passed around the sign up sheet for any corrections or additions to be made. There are approximately 15 members who intend to participate. Camping will be Friday night and Saturday night, with rides beginning each morning at 8. On Saturday the ride will be 60 miles, traveling through Ramona, Vera, Skiatook and Avant. On Sunday there will be 30 and 60 mile options available. The proposal was presented to the members that the club pay for the expenses of the camp site and the groceries. Dan stated that the administrative efforts for collection of individual fees was lengthy and the club could easily absorb the expenses. The motion was made by Norman to accept the proposal and seconded by Jimmy. The vote was placed and unanimously approved. Any Spring Fling questions should be emailed to Kevin.
- New business was presented by Malcolm Joyce. He reminded us that the On the Rock ride is coming up. They will ride the Katy trail. Conoco Phillips will match funds and even wages for time volunteered to help with worthy causes. The cost for the ride is $350 per child. If Pedalers choose to financially support the event they should post Pedaler in the memo of the check so that the club can match the donation. Sean motioned that the club should agree to match the donations again this year as they have in the past. The motion was seconded, voted and passed. The club will match up to $350.
- Rudy brought up three items. First he took the opportunity to thank the volunteers who signed up to help with the rodeo. Secondly he stated he is looking for helpful ideas of how to help the students to be able to lock up their bikes while they are in school. He asked that suggestions be emailed to him. Lastly, he is trying to help a neighbor who has a 12 year old son who is training for a triathlon. He needs someone to help him train for the cycling part of the event. Some of the members have suggested that Rudy contact Steve Corbitt or Laurie Smith for advice. There was also discussion of the Little One Hundred that used to be headed up by Tom Rovenstine.
- Lee's Bicycle shop has moved to down town Tulsa.
- Another new bike shop has opened close to Home Depot, downtown Tulsa.
- Meeting was officially adjourned at 19:42.

March 15th Board meeting began at 6:09pm. Board members attending were Dan, Rudy, Kevin and Marsha. - The agenda included 2010 Budget report of expected income and expenses by Alan which has been delayed until April.
- Rudy discussed details about answers he received concerning club questions for insurance policy with ALB. He agreed to send a separate email listing the details of this information, which includes specifics about what is and is not covered during planned club rides, rides with no fees and invitations to club rides.
- Spring Fling presented by Dan and Kevin. Kevin cannot reserve dates or even question Skiatook Lake about campground availability until after April 1st. Tentative dates are May 7-9th, as the rodeo and Tour de Tulsa are both scheduled the prior weekend. The decision was made that we would like to extend an invitation to the Tulsa and Ponca City clubs to join us. Kevin has a 60 & 40 mile route available to ride in that area should we camp at Skiatook lake.
- Rudy briefly covered a rodeo update.
- Location of the next 2 meetings will be Outlaws with Randy making the reservations and the library with Ray making the reservations.
Pizza arrived, Kevin motioned and board meeting adjourned at 6:28pm. Member's meeting began at 6:35 pm, with introductions by all 17 members who were present. - Treasury report was presented by Kevin. Beginning balance was $2915.12, total deposits were $191.00 (dues and other), expenses were $222.94 (157.94 for LAB insurance), leaving an ending balance of $2883.18.
- Rudy gave a report about the club insurance, stating it only covers club members, riding on our own rides. There were some questions from the floor. More information next month.
- Dan asked for a mountain bike report but no one was present to give one.
- Road bike report, presented by Rudy. Upcoming rides include: March 27- Carthage, MO, Maple Leaf Ride, beginning at 8 am. More info can be found at carthagemapleleafride.com. This is usually a fall ride rescheduled due to construction on route last fall. Additional rides include: Flower Power on April 24th offering routes of 10, 30, 50, 65 & 100 mile choices, Spring Fling, tentatively set for May 7-9th, Tour de Tulsa is May 1st with routes of 22, 48, 61 & 101 miles and finally Tour de Cure set for May 15th with routes of 10, 25, 50 & 75 miles to choose from.
- Next on the agenda was a web/newsletter update but there was no one present to present.
- Rudy delivered a presentation about safety. The topic was for riders to announce your intentions. He suggested riders use common sense. As a group thins out the riders may tend to become more lenient about announcing moves to those around them. He urged riders to not get into their own little world and forget to state "passing on the left" etc. with the objective being to not startle those they are passing, which could end in an accident. One final word was to those using the Pathfinder. Remember it is a shared path, and go with the intent of a leisurely ride. Hard and fast rides belong on the streets, not a shared path.
- Old business began with Dan's recital of Keith's freewheel update, "Look on the web-page, face-book and twitter for more info about freewheel."
- Rudy presented an update about the rodeo. He showed the posters that have been made up and stated that there would be radio announcements and that there was a nice article in the newspaper. He noted that there are not sidewalks at all schools in Bartlesville, but the program is for all interested children from K-5th grade. The rodeo, to be held on May 1st from 9am-noon is coming along nicely. There is a need for 68 volunteers. They will help with safe stops, straight rides, obstacle courses involving sponges, Demon Driveway, Crazy Crossroads and Bike Blender refreshments of a free smoothie and popcorn for all participants. There is also a need for help to lay out the course with 3750' of duct tape, preferably by 8 teams of 2, either on Friday night or early Saturday morning, depending on the weather. The rodeo objective is to prevent the injury of even one child through safe ride training and better awareness made to both the riders and their parents or guardians. One more need mentioned is a need for long tables and lots of chairs.
- Dan and Kevin presented information about Spring Fling. Kevin stated a change of venue to Tall Chief Cove, but cannot reserve dates or even question Skiatook Lake until after April 1st when they open. Tentative dates are May 7-9th, as the rodeo and Tour de Tulsa are both scheduled the prior weekend. The decision was shared that we will extend an invitation to the Tulsa and Ponca City clubs to join us. Kevin has 60 & 40 mile routes available to ride in that area should we camp at Skiatook lake. There was discussion about looking into food options, Norman has brought the food to cook in the past. A sign up sheet was circulated.
- Dan discussed Tour de Cure, which is a fund raising ride in Tulsa that requires a minimum donation of $150 be raised per rider. The courses are 12-75 mile rides and it is well-sponsored and well-supported. It is on May 15th and so far Dan is captain of a team the includes Marsha and Sean. There are coupons available for $5 off the registration fee if anyone would like one.
- New business, Dan so kindly offered the floor to Marsha to state her birthday wish, which is to ride a century with anyone interested before the end of March. Of course, Norman assumed that meant Marsha must be turning 100! Loads of fun!
Then next meeting is to be held on April 19th at Outlaws on Frank Phillips. Motion was made and seconded to adjourn at 7:23pm. |
