Member Meeting, began at 7:01pm on February 15, 2010
Location: Eggbert's
- Dan lead introductions of all members, 16 were present.
- Dan: Share that he has hit an opossum already this year, and concerning fog & lights, even on high beam in fog missed his familiar turn..so please be alert, safe and aware! Dan also mentioned that he is pulling together a team for the upcoming Tour de Cure and we have 4 members currently enrolled. Watch for info about a sign up party where you can save money when you enroll!
- Kevin: Treasury report revealed account balance of $2914.95 on 12/31/09 and a deposit of $40 and expense of $39.83 in January leaving an ending balance of $2915.12.
- Randy had to leave so no Mountain bike report.
- Alan: Road bike leader reported that the club prefers to have a No Drop Ride policy, which simply stated means, "Don't leave someone behind." He also clarified that a Show up Ride indicates that the group will decide where to ride with no advanced designated ride leader. Alan and Kevin encouraged club members to feel free to contact one another , via email or cell phones and ride together outside of the scheduled club rides. Freewheel training rides will begin on March 14, starting with 7 miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays and adding 3 miles each week, see website for more particulars. He also encouraged riders to be aware of road closings (such as the one on 9th street in Dewey) and to share the info with the club. Alan circulated a sign up sheet for ride leaders to volunteer and Dan challenged everyone to choose to lead at least one ride.
- Dale: Web/newsletter update shows no known interest in an actual newsletter, and who would write it? Dale is investigating an upgrade for our website that would allow more current info on the page and would be better than a newsletter.
- Rudy: Consider being VISIBLE! What does it take to be visible? Recognition and then action. The steps are as follows: 1) Search ie: Mind scanning to pick up items to detect. 2) Evaluate. 3) Decision, possible corrective action? 4) Action and 5) Physical reaction. It is most advisable to wear more visible garments (day gloss-fluorescent) and (evening- lighter, reflective and retro reflective). Ride with functioning tail lights, flashing lights, LOOK like a DORK, stay alive!! Today 33,000 deaths are auto related and 1 in 40 bicycle accidents are fatal. Direct causes of the bicycle accidents include environment (rain, dust, sun), obstructions (parked cars), and modern technology (cell phones, texting).
- Old business
- Keith: Although not at the meeting, Keith has suggested the Pedalers consider riding the 5 state OK freewheel. A challenge has been issued to have 40 Pedalers riding the OK Freewheel this year.
- Rudy: Rodeo is scheduled for May 1st with a raindate of May 8th at the north Conoco Phillips parking lot. There will be a 10 station course starting with bike inspection and verifying each participant is wearing a helmet. It is the hope to instill bicycle safety in the minds of both the youth and their guardians through instruction and demonstration at each of the stations. As they navigate the course they will be required to prove safe riding techniques in order to advance to the next station. It is the hope of the rodeo to reinforce such fundamentals and improving the safety of one child will make it a worthy cause. The outreach is to students K-5th grade with a possibility of 3000 participants. It is the goal of the sponsors to provide pre-registration to the target audience right after spring break and receive signed consent forms shortly after to get an informed estimate of how many participants to expect. There is a current need for 60 volunteers.
- New business.
- Rudy and Dale have provided proposed changes to by-laws which include offering only one type of membership, no further need for the former president to serve on the current board, and to delete the last article. At this time Sean motioned, there was a second and the ayes approved the changes.
- Dale solicited volunteers to help him aid a boy scout troop desiring to attain their cycling merit badge. He asked for additional help in gathering props to aid in this workshop such as tires they could change and/or patch and possibly helmet remnants from past crashes. The event is the last Saturday in February. They will work on first aid, bike safety and repair. It will be at Tri-County and Dale's part is from 1-4.
- Dan: Spring Fling (last 2 years at Birch Lake) who would like to co-ordinate this? We may want to change location, possibly Copan Lake, Osage Hills or Elk? Arrangements need to be made to stay a couple of nights and routes to ride during the day. This provides free wheelers a chance to test their riding ability and camping equipment before embarking on the full week of Freewheel.
- Next meeting will be at the library. The following month will be at a restaurant, possibly Outlaws or Tumbleweeds.
- Alan motioned to adjourn at 7:50pm, with Sean seconding it and the ayes have it.
- Meeting so adjourned.
